Wastewater- Treatment, Processes and Novel Technologies
Introduction:
Wastewater is something that we flush down the drain without thinking where it goes and what happens to it. This course is intended to explain what is meant by wastewater and it characteristics. The traditional methods for treating and disposing of wastewater will be covered. The latest technologies used for wastewater treatment will also be covered.

Training Methodology:
The course is a technical course, which will include a number of worked examples and tutorial on the subject. This is intended for the purpose of getting the attendees get used to calculation and design procedures for wastewater treatment processes.
Course Structure:
Day 1
- The Water Cycle
- Wastewater Properties, Chemical and Physical.
- Factors affecting wastewaters with regards to its quality and quantity.
- Factors affecting the design of wastewater treatment plants.
- Classification of Wastewaters.
- The types of trade effluents and the nature of raw sewage.
- Water and wastewater regulations in Europe.
Day 2
Wastewater treatment flowsheets including:
- Determination of treatment objectives
- scale of treatment,
- nature of wastewater;
- discharge consent conditions –
- discharge to sewer, watercourse, marine environment.
- Development of process flowsheet; selection of treatment processes;
- Evaluation of flowsheet options.
Day 3
Physio-chemical and biological treatment processes this will include:
- Basic hydraulics of treatment systems;
- flow measurement;
- storm sewage separation;
- screening; maceration; comminution;
- grit removal;
- sedimentation; flotation; chemical precipitation;
- filtration;
- The Acti flow process;
- disinfection techniques;
Day 4
- Microbiology, bacterial physiology and growth;
- Activated sludge, thin film reactors and variants;
- Microbial digestion, aerobic and anaerobic;
- System design and control.
- Nutrient removal; physio-chemical and biological techniques.
- Small scale treatment units.
- Sludge dewatering and incineration.
